A pretty boy to spend the morning with. I, however, need more coffee.
Rhys Ford’s Dirty Secret Cast of Characters…
Where I learn I’ve never revealed Claudia’s last name.
I actually had this all built out and had been debating including it in the book. I didn’t for several reasons. First, there was no way to reference it to someone’s name on an ebook and secondly, I think I’m so used to Asian names I forget people have issues with them. Now this was driven home to be the other month when I was reading a book set in the UK where two characters had similar names… Gareth and Gary. Confused the hell out of me. *grins*
So, I thought…yep, better include this. Hopefully, if you’ve had issues with the cast of characters, this will help. If you want to learn what Claudia’s last name is… here you go. *laughs*
Problem with writing is that you sometimes lose track of what someone’s wife’s name is. Ben’s wife has been both Candace and Sheila. It’s Sheila. It became Sheila in Dirty Kiss. Apparently I have flashes of canon fail. I admit it. My apologies. So here it is, a cast of characters.
Next book, a glossary of Korean terms. I owe a very sweet adorable First Beta reader a ton of coffee for compiling it for me.

Meet Billy…
And a truly fantastic guy named Adam…
Well… fuck.
I just tossed out about 4000 words from Whiskey and Wry. They just weren’t working for me. So of course I immediately looked around for something to make me a bit lighter in the heart.
Instead, I find this.
Now, I eat meat. I like meat. I have friends who are vegetarian and I support and respect their choices. I always provide food for them when there are meals at my house and anyone else who might have allergies knows that they will always be welcome in my home and find a good meal they can eat. That’s just… how it is here.
But this…. I’m at a loss for.
WordPress is being a douche.
Authoring Et Al and Nonsense.
Why blog?
Okay, there’s a lot of dos and don’ts about being an author. Most of them come off like advice from used cars salesmen. You hear shit like maximize exposure, cross-promotional streaming and all sorts of buzzwords that pretty much boil down to getting into people’s faces and piss them off. Because they’re SICK of seeing you.
Is there a fine balance between getting word out that you’re an author and moving up into someone’s asshole so every time they fart, you’ve attached a balloon to the gas with streamers shouting your name? Yes. There certainly is.
I just haven’t found it yet.
To be honest, I’m a pretty crass person. Or so I think. I look at people who can pull themselves together on a daily basis and wonder how the hell do they do that? I was a grubby little child and I feel like I’m a grubby round adult. I bathe. Every day. *grins* But you know, there’s a certain amount of emotional grub that just doesn’t seem to wash off. And getting up into someone’s face feels like I’m just smearing it around someone else.
So promotions? Yeah, I have to do them if I want people to read what I write. I have to twitter and blog. Because part of being a writer is being an author… and that’s where the writing stops and the hawking begins.
Now if you’ve ever been to a big mall, you’ve seen the phone kiosks where a bunch of douche-bag sales people who aren’t old enough to cut their own toenails try to sell you a phone service. There was a time when these ill-mannered asshats would call out to people as they walked by… like people were chattel to be herded in. They were taught that they needed to get the passer-bys’ attention no matter what. It’s like listening to a cesspool of bullies trying to chum the waters with blood they scraped off the lunchroom lady.
That’s what promoting my books feels like to me.
It could be a cultural thing. We’re taught not to shout out our accomplishments. Trust me, it’s ingrained at an early age. It feels WRONG to scream LOOK AT ME! Sure, the ego strokes are nice but oh, it’s a dangerous thing to fall into. Massive egos and bitterness are fed from compliments. Promoting a book feels like that. It does.
So how to balance out what I feel about promotions with what I should be doing as an author. Let’s face it, if no one knows that I have stuff out there, no one will read it. And if no one reads my stuff, the future stuff doesn’t get bought. But let’s face it, how many times have you been on Twitter, Facebook or Goodreads and said “God, I wish this author’s fingers were broken so I don’t see them “chat me up” any more?
I’ve made a deal with myself. I’ll do promos but I’ll try to do them my way. I’ll retweet reviews, which is kind of silly now that I think about it because people who are following me ALREADY read my books but hey, let’s go with that for right now. I’ll blog a bit about writing but let’s face it. It’s pretty fricking boring to listen to me talk about my writing process. If you all have any questions about anything, I figure you’d ask me. I probably will answer anything you ask me. Honestly. Openly. Unless you ask me why Ben shot Cole and Rick. Out of luck there.
I’ll post excerpts. And I’ll probably post swearing comments about how a fucking book isn’t going anywhere because damn it my brain isn’t working. This happens more than I care for but it’s a part of writing.
There will be posts about music, food and other sundry items in my life because hey, I find odd things interesting and I’ll share them in case you need something to gloss over while you drink your morning coffee.
So I’ll say here, if ever I start tipping over to the carnival sideshow hawking, kick me. Deal? ‘Cause dudes, I know better.
Okay, back to Whiskey and Wry. I finally found the beginning point of the story. But oh, that’s another blog. About writing shit. Process, yeah whatever.*grins*
Nom…Or I Share….
I share because I love all of you. Really….

Tonight’s Dinner: Fish Sticks and Moya’s Potatoe Cakes
A long time ago, there was a small mom and pop store called Moya’s in Wainaku… which is under Kaiwiki where I was born. Moya’s was a tiny wee little place, a store you stopped at only because you needed something quick OR if you were heading to the cane fields and needed a bento for lunch.
The older local ladies woke up early in the morning and cooked for the bentos. You would come in and tell them what you wanted and they would pack it up for you. Now, Moya’s has gone the way of the Dodo… which oddly enough is the name of the family that owns the funeral home* down the street (true story….that’s their name. I thought it was hilarious as a kid. They scolded me for making fun).
Focus…Moya’s, they would cook things that could survive a trip up the mountain and didn’t need to be iced.
NO ONE could match their gobo and to this day, I long for it. Um… a burdock root dish they made. But one of the other things they would automatically give you were these potatoe cakes. They were made from mashed potatoes, minced onion, butter and egg then rolled in bread crumbs. I make them once in a while. They’re pretty easy because you can make them with instant mashed potates but they need a bit of chilling before you toss them into the oil or they spread out like latkes and cook horribly. The secret to a good Moya potatoe cake is the fridge.
Moya’s was a landmark. Someplace to go grab a candy bar or lunch if you were early enough. They only cooked in the wee hours of the morning. If they ran out of something, too bad. That’s all there was. But it was Moya’s and definitely a treat to go grab a bento from there.
Tonight’s Dinner is fish sticks and potatoe cakes. It’s an easy dinner. I’m lazy. I’ve been job hunting and thinking about Whiskey and Wry for my next project. The creamy stuff is a spicy tartar sauce for the fish sticks. Sue me, I love frozen fish sticks. *grins* I also like boxed mac and cheese. It’s all what hits those buttons.

* My cousin Dennis works at Dodo Mortuary digging graves. I’ve always wanted him to grab me a staff t-shirt but no one in the family approves of my humour.
Dirty Laundry Is Off To The Races…

Dirty Laundry, the third book in the Cole McGinnis Mysteries, is off to Dreamspinners Press for consideration. Cross your fingers the review process goes quickly and they accept it post-haste.
For those who don’t know the process, DSP has the right of first refusal for any manuscript in the Cole McGinnis series. This means that while they’ve published the first two books, they are under no obligation to publish the whole series BUT they do get the right to review the books first and THEN decide to whether or not they want to publish it or reject it.
It’s a standard contract clause and one I’m used to. Now, every author has their own process on writing a book. Some submit a proposal and the publisher decided to award a contract based on that proposal. Since I hate pressure like that *grins*, I write the book first then submit it for review. In the case of Dirty Laundry, I did contact DSP to tell them I’d have the third book done in mid-to-late November just to give them a heads-up.
So, there you go. *grins* Wish Cole and Jae luck. HWAITING!
I’m going to watch a few episodes of Nice Guy, a Kdrama, and ruminate over the next Sinner’s Gin plot.
