Murder and MayhemMurder and Mayhem
Dead women tell no tales.

Former cat burglar Rook Stevens stole many a priceless thing in the past, but he’s never been accused of taking a life—until now. It was one thing to find a former associate inside Potter’s Field, his pop culture memorabilia shop, but quite another to stumble across her dead body.

Detective Dante Montoya thought he’d never see Rook Stevens again—not after his former partner falsified evidence to entrap the jewelry thief and Stevens walked off scot-free. So when he tackled a fleeing murder suspect, Dante was shocked to discover the blood-covered man was none other than the thief he’d fought to put in prison and who still makes his blood sing.

Rook is determined to shake loose the murder charge against him, even if it means putting distance between him and the rugged Cuban-Mexican detective who brought him down. If one dead con artist wasn’t bad enough, others soon follow, and as the bodies pile up around Rook’s feet, he’s forced to reach out to the last man he’d expect to believe in his innocence—and the only man who’s ever gotten under Rook’s skin.

Jacob Flores, everybody! Love this man and his new book, Spellbound!

Hi, everyone! I’m thrilled to be here at Rhys Ford. I have to tell you, I love this woman more than words can say. We first met in Albuquerque at GRL and shared an author-signing table. Since then, Rhys hasn’t been able to get rid of me. She is not only uber cool, but she has one of the biggest and kindest hearts I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and loving right back!

So thank you, Rhys, for being my friend and for letting me hop onto your blog.

Rhys Note: Jacob is lying. He’s a lying liar that lies. I stalk him. You can’t miss him. That smile is like having a star going nova right next to you.

I’ll be sharing a short 2-3 minute video reading from my upcoming release Spell Bound.

I hope you enjoy this small glimpse into this world of magic and men I have created.

Mason Blackmoor just can’t compete with his brothers, much less his father. They represent the epitome of black magic, strong, dark, and wicked, and though Mason tries to live up to his respected lineage, most of the spells he casts go awry. To make matters worse, his active power has yet to kick in. While his brothers wield lightning and harness the cold, Mason sits on the sidelines, waiting for the moment when he can finally enter the magical game.

When a dead body is discovered on the football field of his high school, Mason meets Drake Carpenter, the new kid in town. Drake’s confident demeanor and quick wit rub Mason the wrong way. Drake is far too self-assured for someone without an ounce of magical blood in his body, and Mason aims to teach him a lesson—like turn him into a roach. And if he’s lucky, maybe this time Mason won’t be the one turned into an insect.

Not surprisingly, the dislike is mutual and Drake does nothing to dispel Mason’s suspicion that the sexy boy with a southern drawl is somehow connected to the murder.

If only Mason didn’t find himself inexplicably spellbound whenever they are together, they might actually find out what danger hides in the shadows.

Jacob Z. Flores lives a double life. During the day, he is a respected college English professor and mid-level administrator. At night and during his summer vacation, he loosens the tie and tosses aside the trendy sports coat to write man on man fiction, where the hard ass assessor of freshmen level composition turns his attention to the firm posteriors and other rigid appendages of the characters in his fictional world.

Summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, provide Jacob with inspiration for his fiction. The abundance of barely clothed man flesh and daily debauchery stimulates his personal muse. When he isn’t stroking the keyboard, Jacob spends time with his daughter. They both represent a bright blue blip in an otherwise predominantly red swath in south Texas.

Murder and MayhemMurder and Mayhem

All Rook could smell was blood.

Hot. Metallic. Dirty. Blood.

It stung his senses, an angry hornets’ nest of odors he couldn’t outrun—even as he pounded down one of Hollywood’s tight back alleys. Rook could hear shouting, piercing rushes of sound caught in the maze of brick, glass, and cement behind him.

A sun-faded aluminum can crinkled when he stepped on it. Folding up over the edge of his high-top, it clung to his foot for a stride before gravity dislodged it. Nearly tripping over his own feet, Rook stumbled, then caught himself with a grab at a rolling trash can, tipping the enormous black receptacle to the ground. Garbage poured out of the heavy bin, foul, sticky liquids gushing out from its depths, and as Rook jigged around the stream, he was very aware of the sounds of footsteps closing in on him.

He’d be damned if he let them catch him. Continue reading “Excerpts… Murder, Ink and Sloe”

Diverse Reader’s LGBTQ Push Back Charity Giveaway!

LGBTQBannerFB
Diverse Reader is thrilled to announce there are 224 of us authors offering to reward a lucky reader generous enough to give a little bit back to charity. The giveaway will launch on Diversereader at 9AM EST and run until 11.59PM EST on 1st May.
Donate to a charity or share donation links to enter!
To keep things simple, entries will be managed by Rafflecopter. Each participant can enter only once, by leaving a comment on the blog post naming the charity they’ve donated to, or whose donation links they’ve shared.
Once the entries are closed, Rafflecopter will randomly pick winners from the entrants, and Diverse Reader will match them up with donors on a first-come, first-served basis.
To the Giveaway!

LGBT people make up less than 10% of the overall population, yet 40% of homeless kids in the U.S. identify as LGBT. Of them, 68% cited family rejection for the reason they were on the streets. Studies have repeatedly shown that homeless LGBT kids are more at risk of being attacked, robbed, and raped than their heterosexual counterparts, more likely to engage in prostitution or survival sex, more likely to turn to drugs or alcohol, and more likely to attempt or commit suicide. Despite this, less than 25% of homeless shelters cater for or specifically target LGBT kids, leaving them at the mercy of individual organizations who can pick and choose who they help and who they abandon on the streets.

Changing laws and attitudes takes time, and right now there are LGBT people in need who can’t afford to wait. The sooner we can help them, the better, and the more resources we have, the more help we can offer.

That’s why 224 authors, review bloggers, and publishers have got together to offer something wonderful: a reward for people who do a little bit to give back to charity. Instead of spending $5 on a book in the next two weeks, give that $5 to an LGBT charity of your choice, tell us about it in the comments, and go into the draw to win a book from one of our participating donors. And because it’s not all about money, if you can’t make a donation then please take a moment to share a charity’s links and tell us about that instead.

Three fundraisers have been set up for this purpose and have Indiana at its heart:

#Pizza4Equality has all donations going to Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Fund.

Another fundraiser is aiming to raise $100,000 for Indiana Youth Group.

Finally, Planting Peace is trying to raise $100,000 to provide beds for homeless LGBT people.

Please consider giving to one of these deserving fundraisers, or any other LGBT charity anywhere in the world. We’re not telling you where you should donate your time and money, only asking that you do. The smallest things can make the biggest difference, and together, we can do something incredible.

Joe Cosentino Is At My Place! Welcome Mat Out!

Please welcome Joe Cosentino to the blog! Joe is an author with Dreamspinner Press and has written a fantastic story! Everyone please give a warm welcome to Joe. I’ll have you know I resisted the urge to use that last exclamation mark there.

JOE COSENTINO ANSWERS READERS’ QUESTIONS

Rhys Ford, thank you for hosting me today on your amazing blog. Via Facebook, I asked my readers to post questions they would like me to answer on your blog. They came up with some really interesting questions. It was great fun answering them. Enjoy!

CircushappyWhen you were an actor, which director did you get along with best? Have you remained friends with any or your costars?

I am still friends with the writer/director of CIRCUS, a musical I did at the Cubiculo Theatre in NYC in 1975. I played Rodo, the clown. I looked adorable in my clown outfit and makeup. Hah. We are all still friends! We have reunions at each other’s homes. We literally have grown up and grown old(er) together sharing career changes, location changes, marriages, divorces, births, and deaths. Our story would make a great movie. I want to play me!

Over the next few years I also acted opposite Nathan Lane (ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT in dinner theatre), Rosie O’Donnell (AT&T Industrial), Bruce Willis (A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM in regional theatre), Holland Taylor (MY MOTHER WAS NEVER A KID ABC-TV movie), Jason Robards (Commercial Credit Computer commercial), and Charles Keating (NBC-TV’s ANOTHER WORLD) as well as with many many other gifted actors, writers, and directors. After our roles were finished, we moved on to other things and did not remain friends. That is one of the reasons I cherish the CIRCUS group so much.ABC-TV

Where do you get your inspiration for creating your characters? Which of your characters most resembles you?

Each of my characters is a composite of a few people I’ve known. The exceptions are Harold and Stuart in AN INFATUATION (Dreamspinner Press), which started as my one-act play and morphed into the novella. Harold is based on me, and his husband Stuart is based on my spouse. Harold has my sense of humor and ability to forge on despite amazing obstacles. Since it spans a twenty-year period, Harold matures throughout the novella as I did in my life. I love Stuart’s devotion to Harold as well as Stuart’s over planning of everything. My spouse makes lists of the lists he needs to make. He plans the itineraries for our vacations to the minute. Finally I love how Start isn’t jealous of Harold’s infatuation with Mario, because Stuart has the utmost faith in the strength of his and Harold’s relationship. Mario is a composite of a few studly guys I knew as an actor. They took it for granted that everyone was infatuated with them, and they were!

Jana Lane in the Jana Lane mysteries was born with PAPER DOLL by Whiskey Creek Press. She is based on a number of child movie stars like Hayley Mills, Shirley Temple, Patty Duke, etc. I cringe when my students tell me they’ve never heard of them!

The Nicky and Noah comedy mysteries (releasing this summer from Lethe Press with DRAMA QUEEN) take place at a college. Since I am a college theatre professor and department head, my colleagues tease me that if they tick me off I will kill them in one of my books. In actuality, the characters are conglomerations of many people I’ve known. I think that makes the characters more interesting and bit larger than life—which I like!
