Five-year-old Claire Koch was born to two deaf parents, and American Sign Language was her first language. So while 60 of her peers used generic hand motions, Claire chose to use ASL, much to her parents’ surprise.

Awwww! She wanted to make sure mom & dad could understand the song :D..or from what I have witnessed its normal for those in deaf households to sign as well as speak?…gonna just stick with awwwwww! lol

Actually, it may be a combination of the two – because ASL is her first language, she probably automatically uses ASL along with speaking because that’s what’s natural and normal in her house. And of course she’d want mommy and daddy to “hear” her singing, so it was likely just a natural thing for her to do.
I say this from personal experience. One of my older brothers is profoundly deaf so I started to sign and lip read before I could actually speak, I it learned from him. Until I was in 2nd grade or or so, I signed all the time even when my brother wasn’t with me (at my school, friend’s house wherever….). But even though I only sign now when it’s needed, I ALWAYS watch TV or a DVD with closed captioning. It drives everyone (except my brother of course) nuts! 😉

Adorable! I met one of my best friends in a sign language class when I was in my late 20s. She had a deaf niece and nephew and wanted to learn to speak to them but I was just always fascinated by ASL. Her sister automatically signs when she speaks any time with the family so her two kids don’t miss anything. Amazing and beautiful language. This little cupcake is gonna be something, isn’t she?? Love it! 😀
