Upcoming Late June Release: Black Dog Blues

Coming June 2013, Black Dog Blues, an urban fantasy by Rhys Ford.

Black Dog Blues CoverEver since he’d been part of the pot in a high-stakes poker game, elfin outcast Kai Gracen figured he’d used up any good karma he had when Dempsey, a human Stalker, won the hand and took him in. Following the violent merge of Earth and Underhill, the human and elfin races were left with a messy, monster-ridden world and Stalkers were often the only cavalry willing to ride to someone’s rescue when something shadowy and dark moved into the neighbourhood.

There certainly were no shortage of monsters or people stupidly willing to become lunch for one.

It was a hard life but one Kai liked. And he was good at it. Killing monsters was easy. Especially since he was one himself.

After an accident retired Dempsey out, Kai set up permanent shop in San Diego, contracting out to the local SoCalGov depot. It was a decent life, filled with bounty, a few friends and most importantly, no other elfin around to remind him he wasn’t really human.

That was until a sidhe lord named Ryder arrives in San Diego and Kai is conscripted to do a job for Ryder’s fledgling Dawn Court. It was supposed to a simple run; head up the coast during dragon-mating season to retrieve a pregnant human woman seeking sanctuary with the new Court then back to San Diego. Easy, quick and best of all, profitable. But Ryder’s “simple” run leads to massive trouble and Kai ends up being caught in the middle of a deadly bloodline feud he has no hope of escaping.

No one ever got rich by being a Stalker. But then hardly any of them got old either. The way things were looking, it didn’t look like Kai was going to be the exception.

Of Books and Men

Finished Racing for the Sun by Amy Lane. Need to leave a review. Liked it a lot. Even if I was sitting there going… what the fuck is between Santee and Lakeside. *ducks and grins* NOTHING! SHE’S RIGHT! Heh

I did like it. It was a decent book. I liked the unveiling of the characters’ traumas and the blending in of the racing world. I dunno about the hotness of a Taurus SHO but yeah, people really like those chassis to run down the line. All in all, a really good book. *grins*

Typical Amy Lane characters, broken but finding their strength or finding their way. Some lead-in to another book and ah, I do adore Jai. He’s adorable. I think I know one or two of him in my life. *laughs*

Started Tats of Honour by Vona Logan. I just got started. It was late last night and I just had to crash but so far, I really like it. Writing is good and I can see where the writer’s taking the thread so that’s nice. It’ll be interesting once the main cee runs into someone else. Like I’ve said, I’ve JUST started.

Having a lot of ink myself, it’s always interesting to read how other authors view ink and their purpose. It’s such a personal thing. Really, I enjoy reading other viewpoints so much. I’m looking forward to going through this book. I’m enjoying what I’ve read so far.

Beginning to look for cover models for Black Dog Blues. I hate my life. No really, staring at guys really is a bitch because you have this IDEA in your head about what the character looks like and you really can’t find anyone to match that. And well, I don’t know any hot guys who I can line up in a lava field or something to pose like they’re gunning for something.

Wish me luck.

Brief interrupt of Rhys’s blog: And the winner is… plus a nice Saturday visual

Crissy M wins the copy of Finding Jackie! Sorry, I drew it last night but was too tired to post it. I’ll be in touch, Crissy!

Also, while I’m here: sharing this image, on e of a few created by Monique Lehane at Sinfully Sexy Book Reviews to express her vision of Luk and Sonny. She has nice vision!

And now back to you, Rhys and your sweet, sexy stuff. Love the water games! Oh yeah!

Gears and Worlds, Oh My.

13134_steampunkSo I’m reaching the end of Fish and Ghosts. I’ve just the epilogue to do and then well blurb and synopsis. I’ll let it sit for a bit before editing so in the meantime, I’ll be working on that steampunk short to submit to DSP’s anthology.

Steampunk is an odd genre. It requires a delicate balance of science and non-contemporary voice. A certain mood needs to be set and since this is a short… twelve thousand words max… I won’t have much time to do it. But I think it can be done. Just has to be layered through.

And somehow have two guys meet and fall into something in that short of a time. *grins* Which also can be done.

So, what do you like about steampunk? Or dislike? What draws you to the genre? Or have you not read any and are curious? Or not curious? Let me know 😀 I’ve got a day or two before I start tinkering with my brain and kick into the gears.
